The kick-off meeting took place online on 11 April, where the consortium laid a solid foundation for the development and quality of the project. Its mission is to increase understanding of ESG and help organisations achieve their environmental and social goals, by promoting transparency and trust. In doing so, it is driving a cultural shift towards long-term, sustainable outcomes.
Here are the goals to achieve:
Mindset Shift: Training professionals at all levels to adopt more sustainable practices
ESG Dataset: Creating a comprehensive dataset to enrich and customize training
eSg Bot: Simplifying ESG operations with our AI-based bot for reporting, monitoring, and strategy design
Implementation: Encouraging more shipping companies to adopt ESG practices through our dissemination actions.
Stay tuned for more updates to come!
Synergy with Erasmus+ project She4Sea
The eSgEA partnership has explored potential synergies with the EU co-funded project She4Sea – Employability and entrepreneurial development of women in water-based blue economy sectors. eSgEA partners HELMEPA, Militos (Greece), Sea Teach (Spain), and RNDO (Cyprus) are involved in both projects, therefore, specific training and learning content addressing sustainability issues in the maritime sector offers itself for cross-fertilization. In particular, the She4Sea project promotes professional and entrepreneurial development of women in 3 maritime sectors – Maritime transport, Water-based maritime tourism, and Fisheries – building on skills development in three areas: Leadership, Entrepreneurship, and Sustainability. Basic knowledge on the principles of the ESG framework as promoted in the eSgEA project intervention are therefore considered as a potential didactical supplement for the She4Sea training offer, enriching skills development in the ‘Sustainability’ area across the 3 maritime sectors. As soon as the eSgEA training material is finalized, the partnership will identify and integrate specific learning units into the She4Sea training offer, adding value to the existent approach.
Mapping ESG needs and challenges in the shipping industry
In the Spring of 2024 eSgEA Project partners Position Green and HELMEPA jointly developed an online survey questionnaire to assess the ESG implementation challenges faced by professionals operating in the shipping industry.
The final 40-question survey covered a range of focus areas across each of the three pillars of ESG, together with background questions on the respondents and their companies, as well as general ESG questions to help delve into the level of maturity of each company in their sustainability transformation journey.
The survey was subsequently disseminated to contacts of Helmepa and Position Green over the summer period from June to August 2024. The outreach helped canvass insights from over 50 shipping companies.
The ESG focus groups
Focus groups were conducted by HELMEPA and Position Green in order to gain further insights and map shipping company implications regarding ESG implementation challenges, key ESG topics and practices, as well as the level of internal ESG understanding and commitment. Through the discussion, opinions, concerns and expectations of the participants regarding ESG challenges, perceptions, risks and opportunities have been recorded. The focus group’s findings will complement the results of the online survey and the ESG Challenges Matrix. Focus groups were an opportunity for inclusion, open discussion, live conversation and interaction, which strengthens understanding around the project’s goals and objectives.
Good Practices in ESG implementation
Current best practices, challenges, and recommendations for effective ESG implementation in the shipping sector have been identified and demonstrated. 5+1 best practices are demonstrated covering: a) ESG governance and leadership, b) Training and capacity building, c) Data management and reporting, d) Stakeholder engagement, and e) Performance incentives
